Have You Burnt Your Boats?

History has many lessons for business owners of today are you paying attention?

In 711, Tariq ibn Ziyad from North Africa was encouraged by the people of Spain to liberate them from their oppressive ruler, King Roderick.

Landing at Gibraltar, Tariq’s army of 12,000 stood against 60,000 Spaniards, outnumbered 5:1.

With his back to the Mediterranean Sea and a seemingly overwhelming force in front of him, Tariq gave the unthinkable order to his men to “burn their boats.” His army’s only means of escape.

Tariq then delivered an inspiring speech about the end goal, victory, and how they would achieve it. His speech and vision of victory rallied his troops to total commitment to the job at hand. Like all great leaders, Tariq lead the charge himself, to victory.

Tariq’s strategy of burning his boats did three things:

1. He was now committed to either victory or death.

2. It caused his men to focus totally on the job at hand.

3. What sort of crazy men burn their boats in the face of overwhelming odds? Only men committed to victory, that’s who. This scared the hell out of the Spanish. The Spanish confidence dissolved.

Commitment… Focus… Emotional Staying Power

So what is your business goal? What are you prepared to do to achieve it? What are you prepared to sacrifice? Are you willing to make a total commitment to that goal and burn your boats?

Or will you play safe… have one foot on the shore and one in the boat? If you do make the decision to play it safe, do you honestly believe you will succeed by making a half-hearted attempt?

At the end of the day it is your decision. You can have many to coach and advise you. However you are the only one who can supply the key ingredients Commitment… Focus and Emotional Staying Power.

Good luck.
